System76 is a company we have worked with on many projects over the years. They contacted us wanting to do a short video for an upcoming sale but wanted it to stand out from common promotional videos you see online. Kate from System76 already had an idea in mind featuring astronauts landing on Mars for the first time.
There were 2 ways to create this spot. We could create a realistic looking spot that looked like Ridley Scott’s The Martian, but that would be time consuming and expensive. The other way was to let the lack of a budget fit into the story. We created a backdrop that would lift on stage at an elementary school play, and crafted a crude puppet to populate it.
The idea that really powerful computers would get people on Mars and it ends up looking like a child’s play makes the spot stand out. System76 successfully launched this video and the responses were all positive from their customers and fans.
